What is an electronic book
-an eBook? |
An
eBook is an electronic version of a printed book that can be
viewed online from any computer connected to the Internet. |
What
is netLibrary and why do I need an account? |
The
Howe Library has purchased, with a group of other New England
libraries, a collection of over 4,000 electronic books (eBooks)
from netLibrary, a commercial provider of online books. This
collection includes a wide range of reference, academic and popular
materials. The eBooks are full-text, fully searchable, and are
accessible from any web browser. An account is required if
you wish to check-out any of the titles you find. You do
not need an account to view an item. |
How do I create an account? |
If you are using a
computer other than a public access computer at Howe Library,
enter your Libraries of Hanover 14-digit card number in the box
below.
When you are in the Howe Library
collection at netLibrary: chose "Create Account" found
at the top of the page. Fill out the account information and
a password. Use this user name and password every time you access
netLibrary.
|
Does it
matter where I create my account? |
You may establish your netLibrary
account from a Howe Library public access computer or from your
home or office computer. From your home or office computer,
you will need to enter through the login box above using your
Libraries of Hanover card number to create an account. NetLibrary
will then give you access to the Howe Library's eBook collection. |
When
I have my account, do I need to enter netLibrary using the login
box above? |
No,
once you establish your account and password you can go to netLibrary
directly at: www.netlibrary.com. |
How do I "check-out" a book and how
long do I have access to it? |
The
system of checking out eBooks works much like a traditional library.
Log in, and then you can check out a book to read online. Only
one person at a time can check-out an eBook in Howe Library's
collection. |
What does "Browsing" an eBook mean? |
You
can browse an eBook for 15 minutes without creating an account.
To browse an eBook, locate the eBook you want to view. Click
the eBook title to display the information page. Select "browse". |
What
is the difference between the Public Collection, the Library
Collection and the Private Collection? |
There
are three types of eBook collections at netLibrary - Library,
Private and Public. The Library Collection contains the
eBooks the Howe Library has purchased with a group of other libraries.
The Public Collection contains public domain eBooks that
are free to everybody. The Private Collection contains
copyrighted eBooks that Howe Library has not purchased. You cannot
view or borrow eBooks in the Private Collection. You need to
have an account and a password to access the Howe Library's collection. |
|
|
You
can print eBooks one page at a time. If you are printing a substantial
part of a book you will receive a message alerting you to copyright
restrictions. |
How do I search for a book or for information
within a book? |
Keyword Search allows you to quickly locate an eBook
by searching keywords, author, title or subject.
To perform a Keyword Search:
1. Select a Keyword option from the right side of the navigation
panel at the tope of the page.
2. Enter search text.
3. Click "Go"
4. netLibrary displays the search results.
Advance Search allows you to search multiple fields, including
title, author publisher and keywords or any combination. The
more information you enter, the more precise the results.
To perform a Advance Search:
1. Advance search is offered on the main page and under search
tools.
2. Enter search text.
a. Text entered in the Title, Author or Keywords fields search
the title list of eBooks.
b. Text entered in the Full Text field searches the full text
of all eBooks, allowing you to go to a specific page or section
of a book.
3. Select the eBooks collections you wish to search.
4. Click "Search".
5. netLibrary displays the search results.
Command Search lets you create a free-form query to locate an
eBook. Use this powerful search feature if you are familiar with
Boolean operators and with building search queries. Find cCommand
serach by selecting Search Tools from the main navigation bar.
To perform Command Search
:
1. Click Command Search found at the bottom of a Power Search
page.
2. Use the following two-letter codes when building a Command
Search:
|
ti: title |
fu: full text |
|
au: author |
pu: publisher |
|
su: subject |
da: date |
|
ke: keywords |
s: ISBN |
A sample Command Search query might look like this:
au:bly and ti:writers and da:1995-
This search query performs a
search of items authored by Bly, with the word "writers"
in the title, published in or after 1995.
Note: Command searches can be
optimized to some degree by grouping category codes. For example,
if you want all eBooks with the word "blue" in title
and the subject phrase "civil war" but not the subject
"navy", you should compose the following query grouping
the subject codes together:
ti:blue and su:"civil war"
not su:navy |
