Everyone is Reading: Strength In What Remains by Tracy Kidder
A Month-Long Series of Events Highlighting Global Issues with Local Connections
Chronicling the experiences of Burundian refugee Deogratias, Strength in What Remains puts human--and familiar--faces on global issues of genocide, public health care, and civil war. In 1994, Burundian medical student Deo escaped the ethnic genocide convulsing Burundi and Rwanda and arrived in New York City with almost no money, no place to go, and no knowledge of English. Through a combination of his own incredible effort and the help of several remarkably generous people, including Norwich native Sharon McKenna, Deo was able to complete a university education, attend Dartmouth Medical School, and return to Burundi to fulfill his dream of establishing a successful medical clinic and public health service in his home country.
"Everyone is Reading: Strength in What Remains" will feature discussions, small group talks, and other book-related programs designed to engage the community in discussions about the trauma of war, global health initiatives, and the power of the individual to make significant changes in society. The month-long series of events begins September 7 with a panel discussion led by clinicians detailing their experiences working at Deo's clinic in Kigutu Burundi, and in Rwanda, and will end on October 13 with a discussion focusing on the psychiatric toll of war. Other programs will take place throughout September and early October, including lectures, local book discussions at a variety of locations, films, special tours at the Hood Museum of Art, an ongoing display at Berry/Baker Library at Dartmouth, and family programs. One of the highlights of "Everyone is Reading: Strength in What Remains" is a special talk at Howe Library on October 6, by Norwich native Sharon McKenna, who played an integral part in helping Deo begin a new life in the United States.
