Chronicling the experiences of Burundian refugee Deogratias, Strength in What Remains puts human--and familiar--faces on global issues of genocide, public health care, and civil war. In 1994, Burundian medical student Deo escaped the ethnic genocide convulsing Burundi and Rwanda and arrived in New York City with almost no money, no place to go, and no knowledge of English. Through a combination of his own incredible effort and the help of several remarkably generous people, including Norwich native Sharon McKenna, Deo was able to complete a university education, attend Dartmouth Medical School, and return to Burundi to fulfill his dream of establishing a successful medical clinic and public health service in his home country.
Next up in October: Celebrate the 50th anniversary of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
